The head of the police force at Southern University at New Orleans resigned today after the state inspector general released a report alleging that she had misused her office, The Times-Picayune reported.
Among other allegations, the inspector general’s report says that Capt. Leatrice Warren routinely had officers drive her on personal errands during work hours, reducing the level of police protection on the campus, and that she claimed what appeared to be “excessive” amounts of overtime pay.
In a response appended to the report, Captain Warren characterized some of its allegations as gross mischaracterizations, but said she took “full responsibility for those actions that were a result of nonintentional poor judgment.” She also noted that for most of the the period covered by the report, 2006 to 2008, her department, along with the administration, had had the daunting task of establishing “a safe living community for our students” after the ravages of Hurricane Katrina, an effort to which she had “sacrificed many uncompensated hours.” —Charles Huckabee
