New Network Will Help Australian Universities
Australian universities will benefit from a new undersea trans-Pacific cable network -- initially capable of carrying data at a speed of 40 gigabits per second, or more than 1,000 times the speed of a 56-kilobit modem -- that went online last week.
The new network -- called the Southern Cross Cable Network, or S.C.C.N. -- will provide international Internet access for the universities. The network has 120 times the capacity of the existing link to the United
