New Jersey Governor Donates $1-Million to Rutgers Stadium Expansion

Gov. Jon S. Corzine of New Jersey may not be comfortable using state loans to help pay for a $100-million expansion of the Rutgers University football stadium, as he has said, but he is perfectly happy to dip into his own bank account, reports the Courier-News, a newspaper in central New Jersey.

On Wednesday, Governor Corzine and State Sen. Raymond J. Lesniak, both of whom are Democrats, sent a letter to the chairman of the Rutgers Board of Governors stating that the two would take the lead in raising $30-million in private funds for the stadium by next August.

Seed money amounting to $3-million has already been raised, the letter added, though the source was not named.

Senator Lesniak later told the Courier-News that $1-million of the seed money would come from Governor Corzine, and $2-million from an anonymous donor. A press secretary for the governor confirmed the statement, telling the newspaper that Governor Corzine’s contribution was “something he’s doing as a private citizen, not as a governor.” —Libby Sander
