The Institute of International Education announced today a new initiative for colleges interested in establishing partnerships with universities in two countries abroad.
The International Academic Partnerships Program, financed with a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, is a two-year project in which the institute, known as IIE, will help American colleges establish ties with universities in India and China.
IIE is looking for 10 institutions interested in developing partnerships in China and another 10 interested in India. Those accepted will participate in Webinars and other training on identifying and developing partnerships, will travel to the country to meet potential partners and other key players in international education, and will be provided with further guidance afterward.
An advisory board consisting of people with "vast experience" in India and China will guide the project, said Daniel Obst, IIE's director of membership and higher-education services, who is heading up the initiative.
Peggy Blumenthal, IIE's executive vice president, said the project was part of a broader effort by the nonprofit institute to facilitate international activity by American colleges. IIE provides assistance through its 20 international offices, produces research papers on educational exchange, and organizes study tours for administrators and other educators, among other things.
The Education Department grant "gives us the opportunity to pull together a lot of these separate initiatives and coordinate them in a way useful to the U.S. academic community," she said.
The application process for the partnership program will begin within three to four weeks. For further information, send e-mail to iapp@iie.org or visit the institute's Web site.
