New Chief Justice Faced Questions About His Education Views
The Senate voted overwhelmingly last week to confirm John G. Roberts Jr., a federal judge steeped in higher-education law, as the next chief justice of the United States.
The vote was 78 to 22, with all 55 members of the Senate's Republican majority supporting him, as well as half of its 44 Democrats and the chamber's sole independent, Sen. James M. Jeffords of Vermont. Mr. Roberts was sworn into office hours later.
Mr. Roberts had been widely expected to win Senate approval
