New Book Ranks the Top Scholars of U.S. History Since 1945

ACADEMIC RANKER: Robert Allen Rutland, a retired historian, died on December 30 at the age of 78. But his parting critique of his profession is just now reaching bookstores.

"Historians love to talk about each other's work all the time but have a reluctance to record their thoughts concerning colleagues," he writes in a brief introduction to Clio's Favorites: Leading Historians of the United States, 1945-2000, just published by the University of Missouri
