Nebraska Colleges Brace for Cuts

Public colleges in Nebraska expected a major reduction in state support as lawmakers returned late last month for a special session devoted to closing the state's projected $233-million budget gap.

Gov. Mike Johanns, a Republican, has proposed cutting about $26.3-million, or 4.9 percent, from the state's total appropriation for higher education in the 2002-3 fiscal year, the second year in the biennial budget.
