National Academy of Sciences Elects 17 Women
The National Academy of Sciences took steps last week to respond to a longstanding complaint that it has relatively few female and minority-group members. The academy elected 72 new members, including 17 women, the largest number ever inducted in a single year. The new class also includes at least two African-American scientists.
