N.Y. Institute of Technology to Open 'American-Style' College in China

Beijing — The New York Institute of Technology has joined hands with the Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications to establish what the institute is calling “the first American-style undergraduate program” in China.

According to a news release issued on Wednesday by the institute, China’s Ministry of Education has financed the construction of an ultramodern campus for the Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and has dedicated a separate, contiguous complex for the New York Institute of Technology. The program will initially offer four degree programs, with enrollment expected to increase to 6,000 students.

The institute says that the all-English curriculum will offer students a “Western-style college experience” that will include seminars, wide-ranging debates, and question-and-answer sessions with professors and students. It will also “differ markedly from what is common throughout China,” the release says.

The college hopes to attract students eager to earn an American degree without having to study abroad. Graduates will have an option to earn “parallel degrees” from both universities or just the New York Institute of Technology degree. Students will be able to study in Nanjing alone or to take some courses at the institute’s campuses in New York.

Several faculty members from the United States will be based on the new campus in Nanjing, and programs are being developed to bring more American academics to the Nanjing campus as visiting or China-based faculty members. —Paul Mooney
