N.Y. Colleges Hit by Governor's Vetoes
Gov. George E. Pataki of New York last week vetoed more than $600-million that state legislators had agreed to provide to higher education, including money to expand need-based student aid and to finance more full-time faculty members at the state's two public-university systems.
The Legislature has 30 days in which it can try to override the governor's line-item vetoes, and higher-education officials said they were optimistic that lawmakers might try to restore some of the money
