NIH Plans to Support Some Stem-Cell Research, Infuriating Conservative Lawmakers
The National Institutes of Health announced last week that it would finance research that uses stem cells obtained from human embryos, a promising but highly controversial field of study.
The decision, accompanied by proposed guidelines for how these projects would be conducted, immediately drew fire from some members of Congress, who are promising a battle over the issue next year.
The guidelines would not, however, allow researchers to use N.I.H. funds to derive the stem cells
