NIH Needs Change, but Not Administrative Overhaul, Says U.S. Report

The director of the National Institutes of Health should have more money to finance multidisciplinary and innovative research and more authority to set broad priorities for biomedical research, according to a much-anticipated report released last week.

But the report, from the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine, did not say that the agency's many autonomous institutes need a wholesale consolidation to make them more efficient, as some observers had suggested.
