NIH Loan Program May Double
The budget request of the National Institutes of Health for the 2003 fiscal year includes a plan to double spending on a loan-forgiveness program aimed at encouraging more students with doctoral-level degrees to pursue careers in biomedical research. The $56-million proposal was described during a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing last month at which senators also quizzed agency officials about stem-cell research.
