NIH Gets Institute It Didn't Want
Congress has created an institute within the National Institutes of Health to sponsor research on medical imaging and bioengineering. Agency officials had opposed the new entity as unnecessary.
Lawmakers acted after researchers in those fields faulted the N.I.H. for not providing enough support. The agency has devoted more financing and attention to the field in recent years (The Chronicle, May 14, 1999), and had set up an office to coordinate such research
