NIH Director Describes Priorities, Denies Test on Stem Cells

Elias A. Zerhouni, the new director of the National Institutes of Health, said last week that Bush-administration officials did not question him about his views on the morality of research on human embryonic stem cells when considering him for the position.

In his first news conference since starting the job in late May, Dr. Zerhouni also said he hopes that NIH-financed research will help the United States find new ways to lower health-care costs.
