The National Institutes of Health announced the creation on Tuesday of a national consortium of universities that will help researchers bring new treatments more efficiently and quickly to patients. According to an NIH news release, the consortium consists of 12 academic health centers, which will receive a total of about $100-million this year. Eventually some 60 institutions will join the group. The grants are part of an effort, known as the Roadmap project, that is intended to turn laboratory findings into medical treatments (The Chronicle, October 13, 2005).
