NCAA Survey Finds Record Number of Athletes
More athletes are competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association than ever, according to a new study of its member institutions. A total of 360,076 students participated in the N.C.A.A.'s 36 sports in 1998-99, up 6 percent from 1997-98, the study found.
The number of female athletes rose 9 percent, a much stronger rate of growth than that experienced by male athletes (3.7 percent).
