NCAA Stiffens Academic Penalties
College teams whose players struggle academically year after year will soon be subject to more-severe penalties from the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
In August the NCAA's Division I Board of Directors announced a new structure for "historical" penalties, which are imposed if a team's academic performance lags consistently over a four-year period. Performance is measured by an "academic-progress rate," scored on a scale of 1 to 1,000 and based on whether athletes stay
