NCAA Removes Catawba College From Banned List

Catawba College may continue to use its “Indians” nickname without postseason restrictions, the NCAA announced today.

Last August the NCAA placed the North Carolina college on a list of institutions banned from playing host to or participating in NCAA postseason events because the association deemed its Indians nickname to be “hostile and abusive” to American Indians (The Chronicle, August 5, 2005). The NCAA reversed itself after the college received the approval of the Catawba Indian Nation to use the nickname.

Eight colleges remain on the NCAA’s banned list, and several of them are considering suing the NCAA to retain their nicknames or mascots (The Chronicle, May 12). A new bill in Congress would prevent the NCAA from cracking down on team mascots (The Chronicle, May 8).
