Northeastern University is on probation for two years as a result of “major violations” by its men’s basketball program, the NCAA announced on Friday. According to a report issued by the association’s Division I Committee on Infractions, the violations began when a booster provided a range of benefits in 2003 and 2004 to an international athlete as part of efforts to induce him to enroll at Northeastern.
The violations were compounded when officials in the men’s basketball program failed to identify the booster’s actions as breaking NCAA rules. The report does not identify any of the people involved. Among other penalties, Northeastern will also lose scholarships and recruiting visits. The case was resolved through the NCAA’s summary-disposition process, which means that the university does not contest either the facts of the case or the penalties. —Andrew Mytelka
