A group of college presidents will weigh in on how far companies should be allowed to go in using college athletes in their advertising campaigns, the NCAA announced today.
The Division I Management Council was scheduled to review a controversial proposal at next month’s NCAA convention that would allow colleges more opportunities to trade on their players’ popularity. That proposal will probably be tabled while the presidents review the issue, the NCAA said.
The presidents’ group plans to develop guidelines for athletics departments by next fall, said David Berst, the NCAA’s vice president for Division I, in a written statement. —Brad Wolverton
