NCAA Panel Approves Proposal on Pregnant Athletes and Scholarships

Athletes who are pregnant or suffering any injury or other medical condition would not have to fear the loss of their scholarships or other student aid, under a plan endorsed this week by a panel of the NCAA’s Division I, the Associated Press reported. The proposal, which now faces review by the Division I Management Council, stems from a request by Myles Brand, the NCAA’s president, that the association review its rules and guidelines for pregnant athletes. That request followed reports, by ESPN and The Chronicle, among others, that explored how few colleges had policies to protect pregnant athletes and how some of those athletes had suffered as a result. —Andrew Mytelka
