NCAA Considers a Proposal to Restructure Division I
The National Collegiate Athletic Association would retain the structure it uses now for Division I, but might raise the standards an institution must meet to play big-time football, under a preliminary plan put forward last month by a group studying football issues. That could result in some colleges' being kicked out of Division I-A, the N.C.A.A.'s top competitive level.
At present, Division I colleges are divided into three subclassifications -- I-A, I-AA, and I-AAA
