My Tuition Made Me Do It

Two Ohio college students face 20 years in prison after they tried to raise tuition money with two armed robberies, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Andrew Butler, a 20-year-old student at the University of Toledo, and Christopher Avery, a 22-year-old student at the University of Cincinnati, pleaded guilty on Monday to two charges of aggravated robbery and six charges of kidnapping, the newspaper reported.

In July the two students donned black masks and tried to rob an Ohio Checkcashers business in Mount Auburn, but failed after firing four shots at the store’s bullet-resistant glass. The next day they successfully robbed the Valley Central Savings Bank branch in Reading, making away with more than $130,000. The two were caught later, when a witness saw them acting suspiciously and called the police, according to the Enquirer.

Both Mr. Butler and Mr. Avery told the judge on the case that they had turned to robbery because they couldn’t afford to pay their college tuition. With tuition of $9,400 a year at the University of Cincinnati and $7,000 at Toledo, $130,000 certainly would have bought a lot of class. —Elyse Ashburn
