Music Written by Women
To the Editor:
I agree wholeheartedly with Eileen Strempel's advocacy of music by female composers ("How Colleges Can Encourage Female Composers," The Chronicle Review, September 1). In addition to commissions, there are simple things that all applied teachers can do: We can assign more pieces by female composers, and we can record and perform their works. From time to time, my piano students do "theme" recitals, some of which focus on music by women.
