Nearly 80 percent of undergraduates, including many from affluent families, work while attending college, according to a brief report released today by the American Council on Education. Using federal data, researchers found that, on average, students spend 30 hours per week at their jobs, and 23 percent of full-time students work 35 or more hours per week while in college. Paying college expenses and earning spending money are the main reasons students say they work, mostly in off-campus jobs. They also cite parental expectations: 63 percent of working dependent students say their parents expect them to work while in college.
