Colleges and universities in the United States received more gifts than any other group in 2006 from the most charitable donors, according to an annual ranking of the 60 most-generous Americans compiled by The Chronicle of Philanthropy. Colleges got 34 gifts from the top donors; foundations, the next largest group, received 28. Among other trends detected in the survey, nearly half of the top donors last year lived on the West Coast, and institutions in the West claimed a greater share of the gifts. Stanford University, which recently started a record $4.3-billion campaign, received seven gifts, more than any other beneficiary in the Chronicle survey.
