More Traditional-Age Students Consider Community Colleges

Low costs, transferability of credits make 2-year institutions more attractive

New Orleans, Louisiana -- DePaul, Xavier, and Louisiana State Universities all offered admission to Nichole Bowman when she graduated from high school. Louisiana State even offered her a four-year scholarship.

But the scholarship didn't cover room and board, and Ms. Bowman's family could not afford to pay for them. So after leaving high school she worked for a year until friends persuaded her to attend Delgado Community College.
