More Students Seek Mental-Health Counseling, Survey Finds

A growing number of students are seeking treatment for mental-health problems on college campuses, according to a new survey published by the International Association of Counseling Services. Eighty-six percent of college counselors reported that they were seeing an increasing number of students with severe psychological problems, including anxiety and bipolar disorders, and severe depression. The survey also found that 9 percent of all students sought counseling last year.

The survey echoes previously reported findings of other surveys (The Chronicle, November 30, 2004), and the trend has added to the workload of both counselors (The Chronicle, December 16, 2005) and lawyers (The Chronicle, March 24) at colleges.
