Montana State U. Revises Weapons Policy in Wake of Virginia Tech Tragedy

In the wake of the Virginia Tech tragedy, Montana State University has proposed a revised firearms policy that would clarify how weapons must be handled on the campus and specify a long list of banned weapons, the Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported. Campus officials thought the existing policy was too vague. “We decided we needed to be more specific,” Glenn Puffer, associate dean of students, told the newspaper.

The list of banned weapons includes rifles, handguns, swords, martial-arts weapons, real-looking toy guns, and pepper spray, except for small, personal-protection dispensers. The policy would allow students living in campus dormitories to store weapons in lockers, but not to keep them in their rooms. It would also specify that even people who have permits to carry concealed weapons would not be allowed to bring their weapons into campus buildings.

The Virginia Tech rampage has focused attention on campus weapons policies in many states, and sparked debates over whether allowing students to carry guns might prevent such tragedies. One state, Nevada, is considering a plan that would authorize faculty and staff members to train as reserve police officers and carry guns on campuses. —Charles Huckabee
