Money Makes a Difference at Institutions of All Sizes

I think the issue of enrollment size is more complex than "Is Less More at Small Colleges?" (The Chronicle, September 9) indicates. I have great admiration for Earlham College for determining its optimal enrollment based on a judgment of what size faculty is necessary to staff the essential liberal-arts disciplines, moving from there to a desired enrollment based on a fixed faculty-student ratio, and then determining the scope and scale of other aspects of the academic
