Molly Corbett Broad, the former president of the University of North Carolina system who raised tuition and helped win approval of a $3.1-billion bond issue, was named president of the American Council on Education this afternoon.
Ms. Broad, who will succeed David Ward on May 1, will be the first woman to lead the organization since it was founded, in 1918.
Before becoming president of the North Carolina system, in 1997, Ms. Broad was executive vice chancellor and chief operating officer of the California State University system and chief executive officer for Arizona’s three-campus university system.
