Missouri Lawmakers Endorse $350-Million Plan for Campus Construction

The Missouri House of Representatives has given final approval to a $350-million plan to finance campus construction projects with profits from the sale of a portion of the state student-loan agency’s assets. The House approved the legislation by a vote of 91 to 64, largely along party lines, the Associated Press reports. The Senate passed the measure last month.

The vote is a victory for Gov. Matt Blunt, a Republican, who has fought, in the Capitol and in the courts, to tap the nonprofit loan agency’s assets for construction needs. But the victory could be fleeting. The AP reports that a Democratic lawmaker has threatened to use a rare citizen’s petition to try to put the legislation to a statewide vote. —Karin Fischer
