Mississippi Lawmakers Back Desegregation Deal

Mississippi senators were expected this month to follow their colleagues in the House of Representatives and pass a resolution expressing support for a $503-million plan to end the state's long-running college-desegregation lawsuit.

That action would clear the way for U.S. District Judge Neal B. Biggers Jr. to approve the settlement proposal. In an order issued this month, the judge said he would sign off on the agreement if state lawmakers pledged to fully finance it.
