The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor has announced that it will provide its neediest undergraduates with grants instead of loans as part of a 10-percent increase in financial aid, according to a news release. The announcement follows similar steps taken in the past few years by leading private and public universities, most recently by the University of Pennsylvania (The Chronicle, March 23).
