Michigan State Asks Students to Turn Off Their Computers Over Winter Break

To help Michigan State University save thousands of dollars in energy costs, officials there asked students in dormitories to take a simple step: Shut off their computers before heading home for the winter break.

All MSU freshmen are required to have computers, and about 16,000 students live in the dormitories -- the largest residence-hall system in the country -- so the devices add significantly to the university's power bill, says Kathryn E. Lindahl, associate vice
