The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor went on the offensive on Monday, issuing a sharp rebuttal to the U.S. Education Department’s accusations that it had failed to provide adequate wheelchair access in its football stadium.
In a 26-page letter to the department’s Office for Civil Rights, Michigan argued that the government had made numerous “significant errors and omissions” in the scathing report it sent the university last month, which outlined various problems with wheelchair access at the stadium.
According to Michigan, it has consistently adhered to federal disability laws and complied with the government’s requests for information about its stadium changes. The university said it had arranged five campus visits, set up 20 interviews, and provided hundreds of documents to department officials.
Later this month, the university hopes to begin a $226-million renovation of Michigan Stadium. It plans to triple the number of seats for people with disabilities. —Brad Wolverton
