Michigan District Gets Property-Tax Windfall
The Wayne County Community College District narrowly won approval this month of a 150-percent property-tax increase, nearly tripling its revenue from its localities.
The 15,000-student institution -- whose district boundaries include Detroit and some surrounding suburbs -- would not have won the tax increase if the decision had been left to suburban voters. They rejected it by a ratio of four to one. Detroit residents saved the measure, which was approved by a margin of roughly 3,450
