Mich. Universities May Get Time to Comply With Affirmative-Action Ban

Michigan’s attorney general and three state universities have reached an agreement that would allow the institutions to use their existing admissions and financial-aid policies through the end of the current admissions cycle, pending a federal judge’s approval, according to the Associated Press.

A state ban on affirmative-action preferences, approved by voters in November, takes effect this week. The University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University had sought an extension on compliance with the ban because they had already begun accepting students for next fall.

The attorney general, Mike Cox, a Republican, had said he would “vigorously” defend the voters’ decision, but he also said he was open to an extension if the universities had a specific date to adopt the new policy. The federal judge in the case will have to issue an order to make the agreement binding.
