Miami Dade College Cuts Midwifery Program

With enrollment low and costs high, Miami Dade College has suspended its midwifery program, The Miami Herald reported.

The college had notified the members of its incoming class that they needed to pay their $7,000 tuition by 4 p.m. Friday, or the program would be suspended. Seventeen of the 25 students hit the deadline (another student was 10 minutes late), and the college followed through on its promise. Existing students will be allowed to finish their studies.

The program was suspended in 2006 because of high malpractice-insurance costs. Juan Mendieta, a college spokesman, said that insurance is currently $3,000 per student per year and that with fewer students to split the cost, individual fees would rise. —Don Troop
