Mexican University, Paralyzed by Protests, Rescinds Mandatory Tuition Increase
After six weeks of student protests that shut down the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the institution has dropped a plan for its first tuition increase in more than half a century.
Francisco Barnes de Castro, the university's rector, announced that tuition would still be increased -- from the equivalent of two cents a year to about $70 a semester -- but that payment of the higher fee would be voluntary.
