Members of Congress to Support Big Rise in NIH Budget

Budget writers in Congress said at hearings last week that they would fight for a fiscal-2000 budget increase for the National Institutes of Health that is significantly larger than President Clinton's request.

Mr. Clinton's fiscal-2000 budget proposal includes $15.9-billion for the N.I.H., an increase of 2 per cent over its fiscal-1999 budget. The agency's spending increased 15 per cent in this year's
