The Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science formally filed a lawsuit today that seeks $125-million in damages from the County of Los Angeles, which the university accused of creating an “engineered catastrophe” by severing ties between the university and a faltering county hospital that had been plagued for years by reports of shoddy care. The lawsuit carries out the university’s intention, announced last month, to seek legal redress for what it describes as a county decision that “callously set adrift” 248 medical residents. —Andrew Mytelka
