Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California signed into law on Monday a bill that grants broad protection from college censorship to student journalists. The law, which passed the state Legislature overwhelmingly, is a response to a federal appeals court’s decision upholding censorship of a student newspaper at Governors State University, in Illinois (The Chronicle, June 21, 2005).
The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal of the case (The Chronicle, March 3), prompting the California Legislature to take action. The State Assembly approved the bill last spring (The Chronicle, May 15), and the State Senate did so earlier this month (The Chronicle, August 14).
