McCain Visits Famed College Football Team

Sen. John McCain paid a visit to the Marshall University “Thundering Herd” football team at its morning practice recently, calling the team a “special institution” and praising its “courage and tradition of victory,” the Washington Post reports.

The team is the subject of a 2006 movie about a 1970 plane crash that killed most of its members.

Mr. McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, called several plays during the practice and told the team about the camaraderie that he shared with fellow prisoners of war in Vietnam.

“When we didn’t work as a team they broke us down … we were a team and we had leaders,” he said.
