McCain Presses Fight Against Earmarks in His Acceptance Speech

Sen. John McCain officially accepted the Republican nomination for president here on Thursday night, pledging to cut wasteful spending and to use community colleges to retrain workers who have lost their jobs in a changing economy.

But in a speech repeatedly interrupted by raucous chants of "U.S.A." and also by antiwar protesters, Mr. McCain, an Arizona Republican, largely sidestepped the controversial social issues, like restricting immigration and banning stem-cell research,
