Mayor Asks That CUNY Outsource Remediation

New York City's mayor, Rudolph W. Giuliani, has proposed a budget for the 2002 fiscal year that would require the City University of New York to hire a private company to provide remedial education for at least 1,000 students. The mayor, a Republican, said such a move would help the institution improve its academic quality.

Some CUNY faculty members were upset by the plan, which was announced last month. They argued that the institution's own remedial courses have proved effective, and
