The score this week is 1-1 for Carole Berotte Joseph, president of Massachusetts Bay Community College.

Faculty members at the college, in Wellesley, Mass., say she’s causing trouble. But the college’s Board of Trustees thinks she’s doing just fine. Both constituencies made their feelings known this week — the faculty with a decisive vote of no confidence, the trustees with a unanimous vote of support, according to The Boston Globe.

At issue is Ms. Joseph’s reorganization of the college, in which she ousted all six of its deans. Faculty members say the upheaval led the state nursing board to bar the college’s popular nursing program from admitting new students until it hired more qualified personnel.

They denounced Ms. Joseph for causing “institutional chaos,” creating a “divisive and distrustful atmosphere,” and ignoring faculty recommendations, according to the Globe. The chairman of the college’s board countered that the president had done nothing but act in the best interest of the college — a claim Ms. Joseph has made as well.

This week, however, she didn’t comment on the symbolic tug of war over her job. —Elyse Ashburn
