Roxbury Community College, a Massachusetts institution that suffered years of mismanagement in the late 1990s and early 2000s, has progressed to the point that the state auditor last week praised it for vastly improving its operation of student-aid and other programs, The Boston Globe reported today. The fiscal situation was so dire in 2001 that the president resigned and the state nearly placed the college in receivership (The Chronicle, December 21, 2001), a plan that sparked an outcry of protests. An audit in 2003 found some improvement but continued problems in the student-aid program (The Chronicle, March 14, 2003).
