Mascot: Colonel Rebel

Issue: Ole Miss's antebellum mascot has gone the way of the old South. Sort of.

What's happening: University officials had decided to "retire" the controversial Colonel Reb and replace him, in the words of Pete Boone, the athletics director, with a "stronger, tougher, more athletic" mascot. Ole Miss students, professors, alumni, season-ticket holders, and others were invited to vote for one of two replacement mascots: Rebel
